BAH Guide – How much home you can buy – Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota

Here is a guide to how much home you would qualify for based strictly off of known Rapid City, South Dakota BAH.  There is also an idea of how much home you could afford if you were to pay just an extra $100/month above your BAH.  These figures are based off of a 30 year, 6.5%  interest fixed mortgage.

This guide is meant only to provide an idea of what to expect when you relocate to Rapid City, South Dakota and Ellsworth AFB.  Of course, you may qualify for a higher or lower interest rate and/or a lower or higher priced home – depending on current interest rates, your personal credit and which loan you decide to choose.

These numbers were compiled for me by Ken Jones of Journey Mortgage.  ken@journeymortgage.com   605-341-0133 or his personal cell at 605-484-7530.  Ken would be more than happy to visit with you on all of your loan options.

Helping a Fellow VET

Hello everyone,

Today I worked 2 hours at the office and 6 hours helping a friend. He is ex-military and was in dire straits.   His trailer home was totalled by softball (not baseball) sized hail a couple of weeks ago.  His car was totalled, the trailer was totalled, water was pouring in during the storm through his light fixtures.  Everything was wet, moldy, stinky……..it was a nightmare.

Five of us (including 2 airmen from Ellsworth AFB) met him at his home with our pickup trucks and had all his possessions hauled to a storage unit.  He was so thankful and took us out to eat at a great steak house.  He couldn’t thank us enough for the hard work we had done which he could not have afforded to hire someone else to do.

When I got back to my office at 7:30 PM I had 7 messages on my cell phone, 24 e-mail messages and several papers on my desk that need tending to.  But you know what?  I felt better today than if I would have sold a dozen homes.  You just can’t put a price on the feeling you get in helping other people.  Do I like my paychecks?   Heck yeah!   But helping a friend is a blessing and I was glad I could help.

Las Vegas Restaurant Week to benefit Three Square

T-Bone’s Chophouse at Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, NVOne of the perks of living in Las Vegas is the amazing variety of culinary choices. Every major resort has at least one signature restaurant with fabulous cuisine. The exceptional fare from celebrity chefs often comes with a steep price, however, so upscale dining is often limited to special occasions.

From September 2 to 8, Las Vegas Restaurant Week will give diners a chance to experience some of the finest establishments for only $50.07 per person for a three-course meal. Over 50 restaurants will participate. Some of the sample menus include:

  • Aureole (Mandalay Bay)
    – Duo of Hudson Valley Foie Gras (Vanilla scented torchon, seared with port glaze)
    – Slow Braised Beef Short Ribs and Hanger Steak (Truffle-celery root puree wilted swiss chard, Cabernet reduction)
    – Citrus Scented Cheesecake with Huckleberry Compote (Creme brulee ice cream, essence of Cassis, maple brown sugar sauce)

  • Emeril’s Fish House  (MGM Grand)
    – Buffalo Mozzarella, House Cured Bacon Focaccia (with Heirloom Tomatoes and Mixed Baby Greens tossed in a Roasted Shallot Vinaigrette and drizzles of Balsamic Syrup)
    – Grilled Atlantic Salmon (with Sauteed Kale, Roasted Bell Peppers and Linguica Sausage with Flageolet Bean Puree and Creole Tomato Glaze)
    – Emeril’s Banana Cream Pie (with Caramel Sauce, Whipped Cream and Shaved Chocolate)

  • T-Bone’s Chophouse (Red Rock Resort)
    – Arugula Salad (Fresh Arugula, tear drop tomatoes, crispy prosciutto and parmesan cheese, served with a walnut and white balsamic vinaigrette)
    – Filet Mignon (Six ounces of prime filet mignon grilled over Mesquite wood, topped with melted gorgonzola cheese, served with a red wine demi-glace. Accompanied by grilled asparagus and horseradish mashed potatoes)
    – Chocolate Molten Cake (Warm chocolate molten cake, served with peanut butter ice cream and chocolate sauce)

To see the complete list of restaurants and menus, visit the Three Square website. Three Square, an idea of Eric Hilton, is a southern Nevada partnership involving local restaurants, food distributors, UNLV, the Clark County School District, and many other charities geared toward eliminating hunger. Their motto is “When we work together, we don’t just serve food. We serve hope.”

Something to Brag About

At our Chamber of Commerce meeting, last week, the mayor of Albuquerque himself told us about his leadership award and showed us a video that included the award ceremony in London where he was recotnized for his efforts at conservation and sustainability, thus making  Albuquerque among the greenest cities in the world.

The award was not surprising to me. Both Mayor Martin Chavez and Govenor Bill Richardson have been strong advocates of conservation and sustainability.

The mayor initiated the San Juan Chama water conservation project to divert water from the Rio Grande in order to preserve and restore the aquifer, our former primary source of water for household use.

The mayor has been offering incentives for citizens of Albuquerque to cconserve energy and adopt sustainable habits like the creation low maintenance xeriscape gardens and the use of low-flow toilets.

The mayor also made a procolamation last March that all future vehicles purchased by the city of Albuquerque must be vehicles of alternative energy use.

With the latest recognition, Albuquerque is mow a city that is one of the best places to live, raise a family and start a business. It has been found to be one of the fittest cities, one of the brainest, and one of the best for Hispanics. In addition, Albuquerque was predicted to be among the cities with the most promising prospects for the 2007 and 2008 housing market,  and now it is a city that is among tthe greenest.

If you are not yet living Albuquerque,  New Mexico, I ask, What’s keeping you away? Come on to the Land of Enchantment. I’ll help you find your way.

Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico

What is Kirtland Air Force Base

Kirtland Air Force Base is a name that is almost synonymous with Albuquerque, New Mexico. And with good reason.

  • Having absorbed two other neighboring bases over the years, Kirtland Air Force Base at its southeast Albuquerque location is the longest surviving base in the region. It will celebrate sixty years of operation next month, September 14, 2007.
  • Apart from Air Force activities, KAFB is well known for its close links and collaborative efforts in scientific research and development with the Sandia National Laboratories and the Department of Energy.
  • KAFB plays a significant and ever expanding role in the local economy, currently providing jobs for 51, 678 military and civilian personnel. (See the Library Fact Sheet.)

Base Impact on the Community

For all the impact the base has on the community, I sometimes think it is rather unobtrusive, tucked away as it is in the southeast corner of the city, framed between the southern end of the Sandia Mountains and the northern tip of the Manzanos.

But the general population is perhaps touched more than it knows by the presence of the base.

  • I remember the day I drove my car onto the curb and blew out the front tire of my car. I was nowhere near the base, but  a man in uniform was the first to notice my predicament while I waited for AAA to arrive. He stopped, got out of his car, came over, and offered to help. Was I impressed!
  • My hair stylist is a military spouse who lives on base but conducts business for women on and off base. Many of her non-military clients are probably totally unaware of her KAFB connections.
  • Ex-Air Force friends who meet who use base facilities for social gatherings invite me along from time to time and after going the process of getting the required passes I get a glimpse of a world outside my own.

I love having the privilege of helping military clients from the base find homes off base. I can empathize with them because of my own frequent relocations of my past life in the diplomatic service.  With them, in particular, I try to exceed expectations, seeking to give back for the many kindnesses I received while living in “foreign” lands, and also to make up for the times when service did not measure up to my expectations.

I am looking forward to the September 14 anniversary celebrations. I understand they will be spectacular!

Ellsworth AFB – Food and Fun for All.

The Ellsworth AFB community gathered together to take a brief break from the grind of day-to-day life during the base picnic Aug. 20. Food and Fun for All.Centrally located at the Bellamy Fitness Center, this annual family-friendly event was sponsored primarily by local businesses as a way to say thank you to active-duty Airmen, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and families for their hard work, dedication and sacrifices.
